Now let’s bring it back to the start of Television.

The first regularly scheduled television broadcast in the United States aired July 2, 1928, from experimental station W3XK, operated by inventor Charles Francis Jenkins. According to the Library of Congress, Jenkins transmitted five-minute silhouette images derived from motion picture film, using a mechanical scanning system that produced 48-line visuals.

The Smithsonian Institution notes that Jenkins was a pioneer in “radiovision,” having received a patent for wireless picture transmission in 1925. His broadcasts aired five nights a week and reached a small group of early adopters equipped with primitive receivers.

The Federal Communications Commission later documented Jenkins’ work as foundational to the development of television as a public service. Though the technology was immature, Jenkins’ efforts helped usher in a new era of visual media that would transform communication and culture worldwide.

In 1929, Scottish inventor John Logie Baird made history by launching the first commercially available television set, known as the Baird Televisor. This device was sold in the United Kingdom and marked the transition from experimental broadcasts to consumer-accessible technology.

In 1938, commercial television in the United States began to shift from experimental novelty to consumer reality, as manufacturers introduced electronic TV sets and broadcasters launched regular programming in major cities.

The Radio Corporation of America (RCA) led the charge, unveiling its first electronic television sets and initiating scheduled broadcasts through its NBC affiliate in New York City. Programs included news, sports and entertainment, reaching a small but growing audience of early adopters.

According to the Smithsonian Institution, these new sets used cathode ray tube technology, offering clearer images and better sound than earlier mechanical models. RCA’s efforts paved the way for the public debut of television at the 1939 World’s Fair, where crowds gathered to witness live demonstrations.

Meanwhile, DuMont Laboratories, founded by engineer Allen B. DuMont, introduced its Model 180 television set in 1938. Priced at $125, the set was among the first commercially available TVs in the U.S., helping to establish television as a viable consumer product.

Though adoption was slow at first, the groundwork laid in 1938 would soon lead to a media revolution. By the end of the decade, television was destined to become a dominant force in American culture.

After World War II, television sets became mass-produced and affordable for households, leading into the “Golden Age of Television” marked by the rise of network programming and the introduction of color broadcasts in the 1950s and 1960s. Inventions later on included the development of portable transistorized TVs, the expansion of cable television, the switch to all-digital broadcasting, and the introduction of flat-screen and high-definition systems that provide a cinematic viewing experience at home.

And the rest is history.
